Going Green
For over sixty-five years, Melfred Borzall’s Directional Drilling and Horizontal Earth Boring tools have been identified by their signature red color. Now, those red tools have gone green.
The main manufacturing plant is located on California’s central coast, where abundant sunshine is ideal for solar power generation. The Santa Maria plant houses 800 solar panels producing almost 150 kilowatts of power, enough solar electric energy to provide over 90% of the plant’s needs.

Melfred Borzall doesn’t stop at solar power. By replacing the metal halide plant lighting with high efficiency T5 fluorescent lights, the overall energy use for lighting is cut in half. Skylights provide free natural lighting in offices and production spaces. MB also provides flexible scheduling to employees who leave their cars at home and use public transportation or bicycle to work.
The north parking lot features two plug-in stations that allow up to four of its 35 employees to charge their electric cars. In addition, the plant purchased two electric cars for business use.
In a recent expansion, green materials were used throughout the plant. The break room utilizes bamboo cabinets, a fast growing and highly renewable material. The countertops and tile flooring are made of recycled materials, and the flooring is designed to help heat the space and save on energy.
You can feel good about the tools you purchase from Melfred Borzall. When you see the “Made with Solar Power” label, not only are you getting a quality tool priced for value, but the tool is made in a clean, high-tech environmentally friendly facility.
